Have passport, will travel!
One of the things I was excited about when I got out of the military was being able to travel when I wanted to. The idea of not having to wait for leave approvals or worry about available manning, just picking up and going when I wanted to, going wherever I wanted to was definitely appealing to me. Needless to say what I found out was that working for the government and even as a contractor, I still ran into the same issues. I love traveling to different places and being exposed to various cultures. A primary goal of mine is to be able to travel and write about my experiences…uninterrupted.
Last year before I returned to my contracting job, I made somewhat of a bucket list of all the places I planned to visit, here it is in no specific order:
Australia (Brisbane, Sydney, Ayers Rock)
Island hop the Caribbean
Rio de Janeiro
Switzerland (The Alps & Zurich)
I have an idea of who I want to take with me for some of these trips and even what I want to do (yes, I like the idea of themed vacations), but now it’s about advanced planning, a budget, and everyone’s availability.
Do you often want to plan something awesome but have to work around everyone else’s complicated schedule?
~ Checking Off My Travel Bucket List ~
This year I started checking off my Travel Bucket List in the Spring. I decided it was high time to not only go somewhere awesome and relax, but I also wanted to take my #1 Supporter/Fan & Favorite Female Veteran with me, a person who I affectionately call Mommy.
We ran away to Turks & Caicos.
Without giving away an upcoming blog post, I ‘ll just say WE LOVED THIS TRIP! Probably one of the best things we’ve done together in years and we plan to do it again every year. We want to check out a few more islands in the Caribbean together…GIRLS ONLY, maybe add some family members and friends and make it a big party (retreat anyone?)…I’ll keep you posted or maybe you’ll be able to tag along.
It’s now fall and I’m getting ready for my next vacation, I had planned a trip with my girls and some friends to Nicaragua or Costa Rica, then plans changed….Thanks a lot zika virus. At first I as ok with a change in plans, we were going to go Glamping somewhere cool in the U.S., but then the Universe touched my soul one night when I couldn’t sleep and in that moment I decided I was going somewhere solo and all signs pointed to the Caribbean…Costa Rica it is! ZIKA VIRUS and all.
~ Costa Rica ~
Yup, I decided I was taking a chance and going regardless of what that C.D.C. ZIKA Virus map said. My decision also had something to do with a reading assignment from Justice Fergie’s Rockstar Influencer program. After reading Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Big Magic” I had been hit in the head & heart by inspiration. I was no longer afraid of what could happen because I needed to take that chance on what I wanted or I’d never know what was me driving there.
So Costa Rica it is, Playa Tamarindo to be exact. I’m taking a chance and trying out HomeAway.
I’ll be honest, the following words come to mind when I think of my trip: EXCITING, ADVENTURE, SCARY, UNPREDICTABLE, EVOLUTIONARY. However, from the moment I made the proclamation that I was going somewhere solo, I’ve had an over abundance of joy and pride that I’m finally taking a step toward my travel life dreams. I’ve even started planning trips for next year, Morocco with one of my mentors, possibly another AWESOME place in the Caribbean, and then I’m hitting Europe for my 35th with Mom-dukes, a train ride or maybe try my hand at skiing.
What about you, do you have a Travel Bucket List?
